Meditation

Meditation is seen as a valuable healing tool, as it can promote feelings of relaxation and inner peace as well as help transform the negative emotional states that are linked to many diseases.

Meditation has brought many people inner peace and inner knowledge, which has in turn brought self-realization, central to any journey of self-discovery.

A few minutes of meditation each day can improves ones ability to cope with everyday life and help us to develop an awareness of our inner self.

It has been shown through studies that anxiety and stress levels can be reduced effectively through meditation, which also has a healing effect on the physical body. Those suffering illness and recovering from injury can easily practice meditation, meditation can help heal physical ailments and reduce high blood pressure. Recent research has shown that meditation twice a day for about 20 minuites can reduce blockages in your blood vessel.

There are two types of meditation: concrete or Saguna and abstract or Nirguna. Concrete meditation requires an external focus, usually an object, image, sound or symbol, which is used as a tool for concentration. Abstract meditation has no external focus, and consists of absorbing in the self, an abstract idea rather than an object.

Meditation practice typically requires a quiet place, good posture, comfortable with a straight back, relaxed, passive attitude of detachment and a point of focus. This point of focus may be an object, a visualisation, the use of scared sounds (mantras), prayers or sacred hand gestures (mudras).

The recitation of healing mantras during meditation is thought to generate vibrations conducive to healing.

Meditation can be combined with exercise by synchronizing a mantra and breathing with movements, such as steps taken while running or walking or with each bend of a prostration. Tai Chi is seen as a meditative form of exercise.

Meditation is the perfect antidote for the hectic pace of living in today's society. Meditation can help you develop a calmness and tranquillity, reduce stress, and have a richer, deeper experience of life.

A good way to learn meditation is to join classes, and later meditate on your own.
